Registration Is Open for the DC Walk for Carcinoid Cancer

Arlington, VA (September 11, 2018) – eGlobalTech has partnered with the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (NETRF) to host the DC Walk for Carcinoid Cancer. Both organizations are raising money to fund neuroendocrine tumor research for cures and more effective treatments. All proceeds will be donated to NETRF. Only 12,000 neuroendocrine cancer cases are diagnosed each year; therefore, it does not receive the awareness or funding of more prevalent cancers.

The 2-mile fundraising walk will be on Saturday, November 10 (World NET Cancer Awareness Day) starting at Quincy Park in Arlington, VA  at 10:00 am. The route goes through Arlington’s charming Clarendon and Ballston communities and finishes back at Quincy Park for a fun-filled celebration with music, a playground, moon bounce, food trucks, and arts and crafts. For more information about the event, sponsorship information, and to register, please go to  https://www.dcwalk4carcinoidcancer.com/.

All Washingtonians are welcome to participate to raise money for a great cause – the goal is to raise $20,000! Prizes will be given to the most successful fundraisers. Supporters don’t have to live in the Washington Metro Area to participate in the DC Walk for Carcinoid Cancer. Anyone can be a virtual walker in their hometown. This allows participants to be with patients fighting carcinoid cancer in spirit and to help with a noble cause.

Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation (NETRF)

The NETRF is the leading private funder of NET cancer research and a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of the NETRF is to fund research to discover cures and more effective treatments for neuroendocrine cancers. The NETRF awards large-scale, multi-year research grants to leading scientists at renowned research institutions around the world. NETRF is supported by charitable donations from individuals and foundations. Since 2005, the NETRF has invested more than $20 million dollars in neuroendocrine tumor research.

Human-Centered Design Delivers Focused and Meaningful Solutions

,

Human-Centered Design (HCD) begins with obtaining a deep understanding of customers’ needs and leveraging creativity and continuous feedback to better realize useful and tailored solutions. HCD provides a framework for connecting the best ideas to actual user needs – thereby producing successful solutions that last.

BACKGROUND

Too often service and solution providers make assumptions about the wants and needs of their client base, trying to overlay a technological solution to an issue without context. As solutions rely more on advances in artificial intelligence and robotics, it will be crucial to capture and maintain focus on the human element. Without direct interaction with the client to empathize and fully understanding the issue in context of their environment, organizations may develop solutions that do not fully respond to or resolve end-user business needs or requirements. These extraneous solutions can be wasteful, costly, and frustrating to the end-users.

HCD facilitates an interactive development approach aimed at making systems more usable and useful by focusing on the users, their needs and requirements, and by applying human factors, usability knowledge, and iterative techniques. HCD strives to create innovative products, services, and solutions through creative and collaborative practices.

In an agile environment, organizations can no longer rely on traditional approaches. By employing HCD, developers can create solutions that align to a customers’ values and build products or services that are more effective and intuitive for them to use.

HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN ENGAGES THE CUSTOMER THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LIFECYCLE

The HCD process has three phases – the Inspiration Phase, the Ideation Phase, and the Implementation Phase.

gears showing Human Centered Design process

Inspiration Phase

During the Inspiration Phase, the focus is on learning directly from the client through immersion in their environment. The Inspiration phase is about adaptive learning, being open to creative possibilities, and trusting that by adhering to the needs of the client, the ideas generated will evolve and result in the right solution.

Ideation Phase

Synthesis

Synthesis brings together the needs and requirements learned during the Inspiration Phase and organizes them into themes and insights. The outputs from Synthesis are used to identify and target the best ideas for development into opportunities to prototype and test.

Prototyping

Following the Synthesis of ideas into opportunities, the second part of the Ideation Phase is prototyping; expanding ideas into testable processes, products or services. This cyclical process of testing prototypes, getting feedback, and iterating is important to create an effective, innovative solution in the end. HCD leverages the prototype or pilot approach as an important tool designed to test the desirability, feasibility, and viability of solutions with clients at a small scale with minimal risk.

Whereas user-centered design focuses on improving the interface between users and technology, HCD concentrates on actively involving the client recipient all throughout the improvement and development process.

Implementation Phase

During the Implementation Phase, special attention is paid to how the decided upon solution will impact the client environment and how it will be implemented. Long-term success may require incremental change, therefore understanding the target audience and considering change management are paramount.

HCD IS MORE SUCCESSFUL BY GIVING OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL OF THE SOLUTION TO THE CUSTOMER

Even after a solution is implemented, HCD encourages iterative, post-implementation feedback gathering and continuous refinement of the concept to best meet the end user’s needs.

Using a Human-Centered approach to design and develop has substantial benefits for IT organizations and end users. Highly usable systems and products tend to be more successful both technically and from a usability perspective. Solutions designed using human-centered methods improve quality by:

Increasing productivity of users and operational efficiency of organizations
Creating systems that are more intuitive, reduces training and support costs
Increasing usability for users with a wider range of capabilities, increasing accessibility
Improving user experience, reducing discomfort and stress.

Creating an Industry-Recognized, Cybersecurity Awareness Culture at HHS

,
Cybersecurity employee education HHS poster

THE NEED

Large, federated government agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) face the challenge of creating an enterprise-wide culture of consistent cybersecurity best practices.  In addition to ensuring that 100 percent of the Department’s employees (80,000) and contractors (40,000) receive annual Information Security awareness training and role-based training in compliance with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) A-130, the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines, they need recurring programs to empower their workforce to take an active role in cybersecurity, to educate the whole workforce, and to reinforce and promote cybersecurity policies.

OUR SOLUTION

HHS partnered with eGlobalTech (eGT) to build an industry-recognized, cybersecurity training, awareness and education program.  Our approach to cybersecurity education recognizes that we must change the organization’s cybersecurity culture (employees’ thoughts, beliefs and behaviors) to change security outcomes.  The solution we designed educates the broad, non-technical workforce, to increase cyber-hygiene best practices of all users, thereby reducing insider threats. The program weaves together multi-faceted, recurring communications to reinforce annual security and privacy training requirements.

Recognizing that humans are the weakest link in organizational security, eGT’s integrated cybersecurity training, awareness and education program focuses on the “people” part of change management to complement ongoing cybersecurity “processes” and “technologies” deployed throughout HHS.  Since many people find cybersecurity to be an intimidating topic that is too broad in scope and practice to approach, much less master, eGT’s program recognizes this common attitude and presents cybersecurity best practices as personal, practical, and plausible.

The Department-wide initiative called CyberCARE (Cybersecurity Communications, Awareness, Response, and Education) increases employees’ awareness and understanding of critical cybersecurity best practices through website articles, posters and bi-weekly email knowledge checks that prompt staff to read, test their knowledge and attend monthly training.  The monthly Healthy Technology lunch n’ learn trainings that are delivered both in-person and virtually align with the monthly CyberCARE cybersecurity theme to drill-down and teach attendees how to implement cybersecurity best practices.  All content is designed to bridge age, cultural, and attitude gaps, making an intimidating topic seem more approachable and understandable.  Our programs convey the knowledge and skills necessary to safeguard technology, reduce incidents, and use technology safely, both at work and home.  We customize our training content, when necessary, to address specific vulnerabilities within individual Operating Divisions.  As employees are empowered to proactively address and respond to cybercrime, the number of cybersecurity and data privacy incidents decreases.

THE RESULTS

Our program has grown exponentially since its inception in 2016.  Industry has recognized our success with the 2016 Federal Information Systems Security Educators’ Association Best Cybersecurity Website, and the 2018 Bronze Cybersecurity Excellence Award for Best Security Education Program.

The CyberCARE website is consistently the top website visited by HHS employees.  In a single year, eGT has trained close to 5,000 employees across the 12 Operating Divisions of HHS. eGT’s training, awareness and education program reinforces HHS’ ethical phishing program, and together, these efforts have resulted in a significant decrease in employees’ phishing susceptibility – from 14.3 percent in Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 to 6.1 percent cumulative results for the first two quarters in FY 2018.  These numbers quantify the amazing results of eGT’s security education program and its ability to truly empower people to be cybersecurity guardians.

eGT is proud of its partnership with HHS as a model for working together strategically to implement a major change management initiative to create a strong cybersecurity awareness culture within a large and diverse government agency.
